Waking up can be easy for some and hard for others. Some of us are ready to start the day and roll out of bed with no problem, but some of us don’t want to get up until we have to. Everyone is different and there is no doubt about it, however, the morning is a start to a brand new day! I don’t want to have five minutes to get out the door, forgetting to eat breakfast, throwing on mismatched clothes, packing a bag of chips for lunch, and wishing I could be sleeping all day. I want the time to appreciate the new day. The way we treat ourselves in the morning, reflects on us the rest of our day. This year, a big goal of mine is to start my day in a way that will make me feel good, energized, and prepared for what is to come. My New Year Morning Ritual includes…

waking up with the sun…
Having the opportunity to see the sun rise ,when you rise, is a refreshing way to start the day. It will take time to get used to waking up this early, but it will be beneficial in the long run. In the beginning, you might not even get up, but when you get into the routine it will be well worth it. It is one of the only times you get peace and quiet during the day. It is a time where you can set daily goals for yourself, and a time to just be alone before the responsibilities and duties start creeping up. Waking up earlier can also make us feel more productive. A big part of being able to wake up early is to also go to bed early. There have been studies on how camping can improve your sleep routine. The biggest reason for this is because when the sun goes down, we naturally want to go to bed. Without the electricity to light up our surroundings and the power of cell service, we find there are much better things to do than sleep. In the morning, our bodies are charged and have been found to automatically wake up with the sun; making us feel more energized, awake, and feeling fresh to start the new day.

tongue scraping…
Tongue scraping is best to do in the morning once you wake up. As we sleep our bodies are releasing toxins by exiting through the mouth, leaving a residue on your tongue. If we do not scrap our tongue, the unwanted toxins will just go back into the body. Tongue scraping helps with fresh breath, digestion, and to stimulate the internal organs. After including tongue scarping in my morning routine, I can not go a morning without.

oil pulling…
Oil pulling is the act of swishing about a tablespoon or two of coconut or sesame oil in your mouth for 5-20 minutes. It helps with oral health by pulling toxins from your gums, teeth, and tongue. Oil pulling strengthens the teeth and jaw, promotes healthy gums, and can relive tension in the neck. When you oil pull the bad bacteria is being pulled out of your mouth and into the oil, so it is very important to not swallow the oil because you can get very sick. After you spit the oil out (preferably in the trash can or outside, because it can cause build up in the pipes), you want to rinse your mouth really well with water then brush your teeth after.

a tall glass of water…
We all know our bodies need water. After sleeping for hours, a tall glass of water to start the day sounds like a pretty good idea. I am one of the worst people with remembering to drink water through out the day, but I know how important it is. Drinking water first thing in the morning can flush out toxins from the body. I will occasionally feel nauseous after drinking water first thing in the morning. Because of this most days I will have some kind of drink other than water to start the day, like tea, a light smoothie, lemon water, golden milk, or dandelion coffee. This gives me a little boost in the morning while getting fluids into my body.
With the New Year, it is a time for a fresh start. A time to not change but better ourselves.
Love,
Untamed Medicine
