To us, it is more about the tradition of passing down something tangible, symbolic of generational connection. Although the culture of yeast is bound to change given the sourdough starter’s new environment, the act of making bread from scratch and through fermentation will not. Picture 1: The first feeding of the starter led to a very short rise, indicating the weakness of the decades-old starter. The smell was quite…bad, but I continued to feed it for the experiment. Picking your flowers off the front porch. Dissecting your petals in wonder of how a flower with such beauty could be hurt. How a flower of such beauty could bleed. As if pulling open the heart would reveal an inner truth. Without fail, no matter how many flowers I picked, how many petals I opened, how many times I tried to uncover its secrets, there was nothing to be found within. The bleeding hearts did not reveal its wounds on the most eye catching part of its body… Moral of the story (so many years later) no matter the beauty it still bleeds, and just because you don’t see the pain doesn’t mean it’s not there… our most eye catching features may just be a distraction and something we did not choose to have. Finally getting back into my apothecary after trav Finally getting back into my apothecary after traveling for the last few years (not that the travels have stopped, but the plan is to be home for most of the summer). Many of the herbs I had are starting to lose potency. As the colors change from exposure to sunlight and as time passes from when they were first dried. This does not mean that they are bad! This does not mean the end of their time! You can do so many things with herbs, the possibilities are endless!!! Wanted to share some ideas for what can be done, and ways to use them as medicine that aren’t as common :) Starting off with probably one of my favorites: herbal bath soaks πŸ₯°πŸŒΈπŸŒΏβœ¨πŸ‚πŸŒΌπŸͺ·πŸŒŠπŸ«§ * as easy as putting fresh and dried flowers straight into your bath. It is nice to wrap them in cheese cloth or a reusable tea bag so that you don’t risk plant material clogging up the drain (πŸ˜…). * some of my favorites are soothing calendula and chamomile, relaxing lavender and rose, enriching nettles and rosemary. * also don’t forget to add in some epsom salts πŸ™Œβœ¨ Get creative with how you incorporate plants into your daily life! In the last couple of months, I’ve had the oppor In the last couple of months, I’ve had the opportunity to travel, for decompressing and to visit friends and family. As I return home to a more stable schedule, I am reminiscing on how I found small ways to be more eco-conscious while traveling. Although one of the greatest JOYS of traveling is experiencing local cuisine and eating out, if your accommodation includes a kitchen and you utilize it, don’t throw away your food scraps! In many cities or coastal towns, or any place, I have found that there are food waste drop-off sites for local composting businesses. Last week, I visited my cousin in Savannah, Georgia, who is attending SCAD. After cooking with her college friends for a few nights, a hefty amount of food waste was left over. With some research, we found a local food waste drop-off site about a 5-minute walk from our Airbnb! Thank you, @corcompost, for providing this service!! It is well worth seeing if composting services exist in any region you are traveling to, especially as it is becoming more popular. Supporting local farms, eating at farm-to-table restaurants, and learning the local flora are all enjoyable, beneficial things to do while traveling :) No matter where you go, you can always find little ways to be more sustainable. We do not change yesterday just for today, we do not stop what we did today when tomorrow comes. Everyday is earth day as we spend everyday of our lives on this incredible planet we call home! 🌏 All that it give us and all it continues to give. It’s abundance and love that is forever displayed! Caramelized onion & potato soup πŸ₯” πŸ§… I know Caramelized onion & potato soup πŸ₯” πŸ§… I know spring is coming and soup season is coming to an end, but this is a really nice recipe to have on hand when you are getting down to the last of the kitchen staples (which was where I was when I got back from traveling, kitchen clean out - that was me πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ). It is also a great pair with a wild greens grilled cheese!!! With everything starting popping up in the yard now (recipe coming soon :) β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” β€’ cup 2 onions into thin slices and add to the pot on medium low heat with a few TBSP olive oil, salt, pepper, and a little sugar if you are not using sweet onions (omit if you do have sweet onions on hand). β€’ put the lid on to help breakdown the onions. Stir them occasionally until golden brown and soft. Take lid off and let them get caramelized a bit (may need to add a little more oil). β€’ now is the time to add whatever other veggies you may have on hand. I chopped up some celery and add it in with the onions till they get some color. This is also the time to add fresh garlic and other herbs. β€’ peel and cube your potatoes (peeling is optional if just depends on if you want it in your soup). Add them to the pot and stir everything together. β€’ add in enough veggie stock to cover the potatoes. Bring to a boil and then simmer till potatoes are soft. β€’ it is up to you on blending it or not. I like to blend about 2/3rds and leave a few pieces whole. - even though this is somewhat of a kitchen clean out recipe it is also a great way to look in your space cabinet (and maybe herbal apothecary) to see what dried herbs you have on hand. I added thyme, sage, garlic powder, shiitake, and reshi powder in! 🌱 - another tip: if you peel your potatoes don’t just compost the skins. I like to do broccoli, carrot, cabbage. As well as smash and peel garlic cloves. I like to keep them mostly whole for this recipe, but up to you! πŸ™ƒ πŸ₯œ add veggies to a pan with 1-2 Tbsp oil and cook until desired crunch. You can also use sugar, maple syrup, agave, etc. * dash of black pepper Optional (but recommended ☺️) * splash of vanilla extract * dash of nutmeg * dash of cinnamon of cinnamon stick * slice of ginger root or powder β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” Add all the ingredients to a pot and heat on low, mixing occasionally to fully incorporate. With fresh roots I like to let it warm up on the stove for anywhere from 5-10 minutes. If using powdered herbs you can just mix in till warm and serve. If using any large ingredients strain before serving. Though I do want it to be a more intimate space, because that opens doors for bigger conversations. Such as this one… Back in January I did @momentomcollective sound residency with @davidsatori , @izzy_wise , and @naobamusic . Along with many incredible individuals! At @envisionfestival I was able to see most of them again, and meet many more. I have learned SO MUCH from these amazing humans. Through seeing the light radiate out in their passion, kindness, and undeniable talent! Being in an uplifting community has the power to draw out inspiration from within ourselves. It is inspiring to see others shine so bright that it doesn’t matter what else is happening around them! It’s not a matter of being a social person, or someone who works good with others. We can all learn from one another. By finding ways to co-create and build ourselves up together! It’s not always easy, and it’s not always perfect. It’s hard to say goodbye after sharing space with people who bring out the best in you. But the magically beautiful moments are never nearly as powerful without having difficult times! The song in this video was made during the sound residency, through co-creation! From individuals with ALL DIFFERENT backgrounds coming together. The videos show just some of the talent brought to this festival. Seeing all these insanely talented circus clowns through a screen does not do justice the power it has to watch them in person. But if you even get a glimpse of the radiant light they shine take it as inspiration for what you can share with the world! Do you travel with your starter?!🀩 (Or are you Do you travel with your starter?!🀩 (Or are you not as crazy as I am πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚) Well I’ll tell you traveling with a starter is possible!… if you were wondering. It’s not always easy, but always worth it to see the joy on people’s faces of a fresh loaf of bread πŸ₯° My starter was made in Virginia and traveled to Vermont, Rhode Island, Ohio, San Diego, West Virginia, Maine, and now Costa Rica… Taken on carry on, checked luggage, endless road trips, you name it. Has been fed ranging from some of the best organic locally grown hand milled flour to the cheapest thing off the gas station shelf. (Has even had oat flour accidentally πŸ˜…). I have given it bottled water from a road trip to free flowing glacier spring water in the forest. This little container of microorganisms has had quite the life, and it continues to flourish (even after leaving it baking in the Costa Rica sun when the glass container wasn’t allowed into the festival πŸ˜…). The history of sourdough starters goes back super far into history! And how do you think it got around?! Humans have been traveling with their beloved starters for GENERATIONS, and we have lost that. I’m not saying you have to travel all over the world with it, but maybe you give making one a try πŸ€ͺ and experience the joy on others faces (and your own) when a fresh loaf of bread comes out of the oven. Also it’s just like a party trick to feed your starter and everyone gets to see it bubbling over the next morning πŸ˜‚ (many people think it’s magic!… which it kinda is!) More recently I have been trying it a little more here and there. During @envisionfestival this last week I did bring some fun stuff to play around with. @fatandthemoon and @cocokind are my favorite makeup sparkles because they not only look good but are good for you! As far as regular makeup goes (so not crazy festival sparkles πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚) I like: @fatandthemoon adornments @mineralfusion mascara & concealer & foundation Arrowroot powder+cocoa powder for powder foundation I am no makeup expert by any means πŸ˜‚ like super far from it, but these are somethings I like and wanted to share 😊 Know you are a beautiful human being just the way you are! That makeup should never be about covering yourself up but about lifting yourself up! β™₯️ Use it to enhance your shine, not to dull your radiance 🌞 And when using product on any part of your body, especially the face, make sure to be mindful of what you are using. There is a crazy amount of products out in the world that is damaging our bodies. Even down to the makeup you use can be intentionally used to benefit our body. Big reason why I love some of these brands so much is because they are infused with medicine that not only serves its purpose of makeup, but is beneficial for the skin as well!
