“Without leaves, without buds, without flowers, yet, they form fruit; as a food, as a tonic, as a medicine, the entire creation is precious” (Chang and Miles, 1989). 🍄

I think this quote perfectly defines what a mushroom is and its mystical qualities. Pictured above is my roommate holding golden oyster mushrooms, or Pleurotus citrinopileatus, that she grew on the farm we are working on in Vermont. Successful mushroom cultivation of most types requires lignocellulosic material, which refers to a type of dry plant matter. The vegetative part of the fungus is called mycelium, which branches out in the plant material to produce a fruiting body, the mushroom. Mushroom cultivation is complex, but it can also be a fun experiment, depending on the mushroom species, for beginners interested in the process. My roommate is a beginner, as this is her first time inoculating mushroom spawn. She picked a promising mushroom species, the oyster, that is relatively easy to cultivate. Her process included:
-Finding a suitable location for the mushroom spawn
-Building a cage from metal fencing
-Filling the cage with straw as the cultivation substrate
-Placing the mushroom spawn inside the straw

Within a few weeks, golden oyster mushrooms started to fruit!

As the process went on, it was interesting to see the mycelium spread throughout the straw, and become fruit.
I am also in the process of learning about mushroom cultivation and the unique properties the fungus has. So much information! More to come on this:)

The other day I got around to making a really fuel

The other day I got around to making a really fueling breakfast, which I haven’t been able to do in quite awhile.

This bowl had:
🍓oatmeal
🍓cacao powder
🍓cacao nibs
🍓maple syrup
🍓cinnamon
🍓chia seeds
🍓hemp seeds
🍓banana
🍓strawberries
🍓blueberries

The difference it makes when we are able to get a nourishing meal in for the day is huge!

Breakfast is not everyone’s favorite meal, or it is not right for everyone’s body to pick such a dense dish to early.
This morning it was exactly what I needed to get through the day. But that is not the case every day. Some days I need that fueling, dense, nourishing meal for lunch.

What your body needs is different from everyone else and it will be different day by day. A dense meal for one may look very different to somebody else.

I will say though that it makes a world of a difference when you are able to get that meal in once a day (and I’m sure you have a picture in your head of what that is for you).

If I have a big bowl of oats, fruit, and seeds one morning my meals later in the day would probably look more like a salad for lunch and maybe roasted vegetables with guac for dinner. My body can not take a dense dish for every meal, but it feels best when I get one in. Maybe some days I don’t need one at all, others maybe I need two!

Long story short your body will tell you what it does and doesn’t like, listen to it, because that will make you feel so much better from the inside out!!!

(Not really sure where this is gonna go but have been thinking a lot and not posting😅)

Somehow things come full circle. And it ends up being the most random or least expected events.

It’s hard to know when something coming full circle is actually for you to follow or a reminder to leave it behind…

When you give something a little push, typically, it will get off the ground enough to keep it going. Though not always.
We need to realize when things are just being dragged along we either need to:

✨step up and say loud and clear what we want/need/feel

OR

✨leave it behind because we don’t need it and aren’t ready for it.

So which one do you need to do?

What has been weighing you down and dragging you behind?

What has come back around to make you take a second look to know what is best for you?

It’s been a minute since we have posted…

Life has gotten busy and honestly I haven’t really been inspired to post. Or when I do I just don’t have the time to sit down and think about what I wanna say.

I don’t want to post just to post, I want there to be meaning, a really good recipe, are at least something to be taken away from it. And recently that hasn’t been the case.

The past couple weeks (or couple months really) I have not slowed down. No time to take a break. For me I do not realize how much I need to take time for myself until I get a small break and crash. Once I get a breather it is harder to get moving again. When you are just going and going without a stop you don’t have time to think about how much you are pushing yourself.

I haven’t had time in the kitchen, or time to create, and with not enough time to slow down and think I haven’t been able to find words I want to say on this platform.

I guess there isn’t really a meaning behind this post, but just wanted to hop on and say why things have been moving slowly on here. And that is simply because life is moving way to fast for me to give to Instagram.

If you have read this far I want you to remember that when life starts moving super fast the best thing you can do is take a minute to slow down. Not just slow down but recharge. I know it’s hard, I’m the worst 😅 but just a reminder because I have needed it and thought you might too.

I hope to spend more time on here, quality time!

And I have said enough words now so anyways hope you all are having great day! FGIF!!!

🤍 STRAWBERRIES AND CREAM! 🍓

Ok finally something I’m not too late for 😂🙈

Strawberry season is coming in hot so here is a fabulous way to use them (also 3 recipes in 1!!!)

Quick strawberry jam:
🍓wash and dry your strawberries off a bit. You can use fresh or frozen, but obviously the fresh is gonna be more flavorful.
🍓roughly chop them up just a bit and place in a sauce pan on medium heat. When they start the heat up smash them down so the juices come out. Make sure to to burn them so keep stirring.
🍓add a sweetener of choice (sugar, maple syrup, honey, agave) and a splash of lemon juice.
🍓bring to a low boil and turn down to simmer. The longer you let it stay on the heat the thicker it will get.

Home whipped cream:
🤍 in a larger bowl add your heavy whipping cream (you can also use @nutpods for a dairy free alternative) using a hand or electric whisk start to whip the cream until it gets a bit thicker. Add in your sweetener of choice and a slash of vanilla. Keep whipping till you get the consistency you want.

Alright now for the lovely beverage...

There are kinda two ways to do this, the aesthetic way (what you see here) and the practical way.

So you can do what I did and fill in the order of strawberry jam, ice, milk of choice, whip cream. Or mix your strawberry jam and milk together and pour over ice and top with cream!!!

🌼DANDELION FRITTERS🌼

Ughhh ok I’m mad again because I didn’t get this recipe out fast enough, but if you still got dandelion flowers that haven’t gone to seed you gotta make these (or save this post for next year 🙌)!

🌼 collect your dandelion flowers and place in a colander. You wanna leave them sit for a few minutes outside so the big crawl out if there are any.

🌼get together three bowls. Add flour of choice to one (you can use your favorite gf one), an egg with some water whisked together to another, and bread crumbs to the last one.

🌼 get a pan going with enough oil to cover the bottom good. Put on medium high heat, adjusting when it gets too hot or not hot enough. You basically don’t want oil splattering everywhere but you want the food to sizzle when placed in the pan.

🌼 you are gonna dip the flowers into the flour, then egg wash, and finally bread crumbs. Sedentary coated in each layer.

🌼 fry flower for a couple minutes on each side until holder brown and to your liking!

🌼 enjoy with a dipping sauce of choice!!!

Sorry I get so happy about everything blooming and sprouting and I take all these pictures but forget to post them 😅

So I know the red bud buds are making there way out so here is a lovely picture to enjoy their beauty just a little longer.

I mean just how prolific these trees can be makes me SO HAPPY!!! 😝

(and yes if you are not familiar with them they are most likely the pink/purple/red you were seeing all along the roads while driving a few weeks ago)

Nettles anybody!?!!

My bad it took me a minute to post this recipe as the nettles are staring to get much bigger now, but there is still time! 🤪

💚ŚPRĮŃG ÑĖTTŁĘ ŠŌÚP💚
• young stinging nettle tops and leaves (make sure you harvest with gloves & clippers/scissors, obviously unless you are like wicked hard core and/or need to get the blood flowing to your phalanges)

• other wild greens including garlic mustard, dandelion greens (not a bunch just because they are super bitter), violet greens, wild onions (only if you have a high powered blender or like it stringy)

• basic seasonings of choice - salt, pepper, garlic powder, etc

• veggie stock or water

- first boil you nettle leaves in some water so they don’t sting you. Just for a few minutes.
- strain the nettle leaves and add all you wild greens with a little oil or water.
- Once they get a bit caramelized add you seasonings.
-finally add you veggie broth and let heat up till warm.
- blend it all up! At this point you can add more seasonings. A little acid (from fire cider or apple cider vinegar) if you like. Or some honey if the greens are super bitter.
- like any soup you play around with it and see what taste good 😌
- enjoy!
* I like to have some rice or quinoa as a side

Tis the season! 🌼

Oh dandelion... 🌼🐝🪲🍀🌞

One of the first plants to show its face after the long winter, that is if there is no dandelion killer being sprayed.

This plant, with its bitter leaves, detoxifying root and nutritious flower, does as much good for the earth as it does for us.

Dandelions have tap roots that grow straight down deep into the soil. Securing the ground to prevent erosion. This deep root also brings nutrients up to the surface for other plants to thrive. This is why they are one of the first plants to come after the soil has been depleted. Being so resilient, they come in to create a home for other plants so the ecosystem can thrive again. Being one of the first to flower in the spring they are a huge food supply for the bees and other pollinators. With their bright yellow targets they awaken everyone from winter hibernation with food and nourishment.

As for our bodies this plant is entirely edible. Rich in vitamins and minerals that we have been without during the cold winter. As well as with its detoxifying benefits it is especially cleansing to the liver and kidneys. The key organs in our bodies that take out toxins from the body. The recipes for this plant are endless, you just gotta be creative ;)

Not to mention the bright yellow flower brings a little more sunshine after the long dark days, and allow us to make wishes I order to spread their seeds across the land! 🌼

For Earth Day 2021, we wanted to share something that we are passionate about and believe consumers have the power to influence: regenerative agriculture.

Regenerative agriculture has become quite the buzzword recently. The practice consists of learning the processes of the land and supporting those processes, focusing on the farmer’s personal goals and values, restoring the health and vitality of a functional ecosystem, and constantly learning. According to the nonprofit Regeneration International, transitioning 10% to 20% of global agriculture production to regenerative practices has the power to sequester enough carbon dioxide to begin reversing climate change. Given the significance of regenerative agriculture and the decades of scientific research proving its environmental benefits, why are we not seeing a higher adoption rate of regenerative agriculture by farmers?

Among the many diverse reasons defining barriers to adopting regenerative agriculture, one of the most cited reasons is the lack of market demand. Consumers must become knowledgeable on the benefits of regenerative agriculture for market demand to develop and justify higher prices for produce farmed regeneratively. Once farmers can guarantee a market demand for regenerative products, then they will be more apt to adopt its practices (this is a highly simplified prediction, with many other factors not included in this explanation that comes into play).

As consumers, our dollar and what we decide to spend it on is a powerful force. To help create a market for regenerative agriculture, we want to spread the word on a few products and companies working with regenerative producers so that we can start to generate a force of demand. These include @patagonia Patagonia Provisions, @drbronner, @naturespathorganic, @herbpharm, @guayaki Guayaki Yerba Mate, @timberland Timberland, @generalmills General Mills, and @milkadamia, to name a few. Also, be on the lookout for products that have the Regenerative Organic Certified label on them.

Avocado toast!!! 🥑
A few ways...

🍃Fried nettles: with stinging nettles pupping up out of the ground with all the other greens of spring thought it was a perfect edition. When harvesting them make sure to wear gloves (unless you are hard core haha). Boil in water for a few minutes to stop the sting. Next add your nettles and any other seasonings to a pan with some oil. Add on top of you avocado toast!

🍄 mushrooms & onions: throw some mushrooms and onions in a pan with oil and seasonings. With morels in season that would be SUPER good, but early I didn’t have any.

🍠 roasted sweet potato: space a sweet potato into thin slices. Top with oil, garlic, rosemary, salt & pepper. Bake in oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit till soft. Place on top of your toast!!

🍁 maple baked tofu: cut some slabs of tofu and place on a pan. Top with little soy sauce, maple syrup, garlic powder, salt & pepper. Bake in over at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10-15 minutes. Add on top of avocado toast.

🌸 classic: you can also always go classic :) and with all the edible flowers blooming (redbuds, violets, star chickweed, etc.) you can make them look extra pretty 🤩

(I just really liked the picture so wanted to post it 😂 but we can talk about bars now since we got the picture and all...)

I’ll tell you right now that shampoo and conditioner bars are the biggest “zero-waste” swap I made that I was so impressed I will not go back! When I first started hearing about them I never thought I could make the transition, but I went for it and bought one. I was so blown away that I have not gotten liquid shampoo and conditioner since. I have used it a few times when it was all I had and honestly I much rather the bar now.

So a few things I wish I knew before making this transition:

✨some companies only make shampoo bars. So they are like a two in one. If that works for you great! But for my hair I needed both a shampoo and conditioner bar. So I want you to know that they both exist, so no need to worry about leaving behind your silky, smooth, moisturizing conditioner cause you can get it in bar form!
✨not all bars are the same. Again... not all bars are the same. There are SOOOO MANY out there and I am not saying that hair care bars will work for everyone, but I want you to know that there are many to try from that are all very different so there is a good chance you will find one you like :)
✨traveling will be so so so much easier!! You don’t have to pack such big containers and worry about not having enough. You can also bring them in your carry on bags on a plane! Even if I liked the liquid version more I would probably have the bars to travel because they are so much easier... I think

Those are my biggest reasons to give them a try haha 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Looking at the little things in life 😊

You don’t need something big to happen in your life in order to be happy, grateful, or even sad.

Often times for me it’s the little things that have the biggest impact on my mood and how I feel. Something someone said, the smile they gave me, the sand in my toes, the suns rise and set, or a delicious bite I had.

I’ve been in Hawaii the past few weeks so not a lot of recipes and herbal products being made. Mostly just doing lots of thinking (hopefully these kind of posts aren’t overwhelming you or annoying 😅).

💭 I have had some crazy dreams the last few weeks, mostly relating to people close to me. I don’t know why I have the weirdest dreams 🙈 but I do and it’s little things like these that will stay with me for awhile. Don’t know if others have this experience, but for me I can be super impacted by what people say or think towards me, and in a dream it can take me for a crazy ride when I don’t know what is a dream and what actually happened.

So yeah I don’t know haha. My point being the little things in life have just as much an impact as the big things. Or sometimes even more of an impact because we may not realize the little thing that is subconsciously on our mind.

On another note of little things in life... we have recently gotten a lot of new followers and I wanted to say thank you to all that have been supposing us and what we share!!!💕

Lastly, can we take a minute to appreciate how adorable these tiny shells are :)

A new day, of a new week, of a new month.

Yet again can not wrap my head around the fact that we are beginning another month in 2021. As we say goodbye to March 2021 I encourage you to welcome April 2021 with open arms.

The month where places that have winter really see the change in it coming to an end. The month where everything starts coming back to life and waking up. The first month of the year that has longer days.

Resolutions do not have to start at the beginning of the year, at the end of another. They can happen midweek, beginning of a month, at the end of a day. They also do not have to start all at once. They can be gradually eased into.

This April I am saying yes to more things that scare me, in a good way. Expanding my horizons. It’s not gonna happen all at once, but it’s going to start happening more.

Morning thoughts 💭......

I have been thinking a lot about what the future is going to look like, for me personally as well as for everyone as a whole. Not that we could have any picture of what the future looked like before a global pandemic, but now it’s even harder to really know what’s gonna happen next.

I find it a hard balance sometimes to live moments in the present while also being aware of how I can prepare my self for the future. Right now I’m in a place where I feel like all I am doing is just waiting for a point later on down the road. I need to live more in the moment and do the things I love and want to do now! I know I can’t do everything, but that doesn’t mean I have to wait for it all.

That being said I need to accept that the future will play out the way it should. I can’t spend my days now worrying about what I can do to make my future better (to the extent of that being all I do in the present).

So idk I guess the take away is that we can’t wait for the future to do what we want to do and we can’t do everything now (if that even makes sense). Things will play out the way they need to and in this moment do what you love!

p.s - I just signed up for a surfing class and I have never surfed before in my life 😂... live in the moment 🤙 (what am I doing 🙈)
